Backcountry ATV, UTV & Snowmobile Safety Training

Our Backcountry Safety Training Program is designed specifically for resource-sector operations where ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles are essential for remote access, supervision, timber assessment, corridor inspection, and fieldwork in challenging terrain.

We equip personnel with practical, real-world skills, hazard awareness, and decision-making ability required to operate safely in dynamic and high-risk backcountry environments year-round.

Training Includes

Operational Foundations

  • Machine familiarization, controls, and rider positioning (ATV, UTV, and snowmobile)

  • Safe start-up, shutdown, and load management procedures

  • Pre-ride inspections and preventative maintenance practices

Backcountry & Forestry Hazard Awareness

  • Navigating cut blocks, slash, steep terrain, and hidden obstacles

  • Identifying terrain traps, creek crossings, embankments, and unstable ground

  • Managing variable snowpack, off-trail travel conditions, and seasonal surface changes

Risk Assessment & Task Execution

  • Dynamic field-level risk assessments

  • Route planning for remote access and infrastructure support

  • Controlled riding techniques designed for variable terrain, changing snowpack, and evolving ground conditions

Field Recovery & Emergency Preparedness

  • Safe extraction techniques for stuck or immobilized machines

  • Basic troubleshooting and field repairs

  • Backcountry survival principles and emergency response planning

We also provide instruction on current provincial regulations and applicable federal requirements governing ATV, UTV, and snowmobile operation, ensuring personnel operate safely, responsibly, and in full legal compliance.

This program supports employer due diligence, strengthens safety culture, reduces incident rates, and minimizes equipment damage and operational downtime in remote field operations.

Our training is certified by the Canada Safety Council and recognized across all provinces. Course content exceeds standards administered by WorkSafeBC.

I took a two day snowmobile safety training course through Rob at BackCountry Safety Training as a work training requirement. The course offered was excellent. Rob went above and beyond to teach us useful skills and real life skill applications. Our group had so much fun and we are excited to put our new skills to use. Although Rob offers a one day snowmobile operators license course, I highly recommend taking the course over two days.
